About FBCC

The Freshwater Bioresources Culture Collection

is the only bioresources center specializing in freshwater wildlife in Korea, which collects, authenticates, preserves, and distributes freshwater bioresources. Established and operated by the Nakdonggang National Institute of Biological Resources (NNIBR) since 2016, the FBCC has been committed to bringing freshwater bioresources with high-value potential to researchers. The FBCC’s collection represents the unique biodiversity of freshwater wildlife, which includes microalgae, bacteria, fungi, extracts, genetic resources, such as tissues and genomic DNA. We currently hold approximately 20,000 bioresources. Over the past seven years, we have provided over 18,000 materials to researchers from a wide range of fields.

To ensure a stable preservation and distribution system for high-quality bioresources, we operate advanced facilities, such as cryopreservation, microalgae-cultivation, and freeze-drying-storage facilities. In addition, all processes carried out at the FBCC are in compliance with the ISO 9001:2015 international quality management standards. Currently, we are in the process of acquiring ISO 20387:2018 accreditation, which is the international standard for the competence, impartiality, and consistent operation of biobanks. In addition to supplying bioresources to researchers, we are actively engaged in research and development aimed at improving the preservation and utilization of these bioresources. We disseminate the achievements to the research community through educational programs.

Recently, there has been a notable paradigm shift in life science research resources, from the previous perception as mere materials to key elements that fuel innovation in the field of biotechnology. Consequently, the relevant authorities have collaborated to establish a demand-driven enhancement strategy for resources focused on promoting bio-economic growth. In line with this trend, FBCC will continue to consolidate comprehensive information on the exploitation of bioresources and strengthen quality management systems to meet international standards, thereby providing researchers with reliable and desired freshwater bioresources.
